It’s a whole different experience painting outdoors, and this is especially true in relation to life drawing. Senses are heightened, breeze, birdsong and the changing light all add to the pleasure, And drawing a model in a beautiful garden setting is sublime. 

This is the fourth year we’ve run En Plein Air life drawing, and we meet again in The Turrill Sculpture Garden in the heart of Summertown, Oxford on Sunday 10th August.  Our session will run for 2.5 hours and we will have a picnic break halfway through, We will provide wine, water and nibbles, so if you would like to bring something more to snack on, feel free! 

This is a popular event and places sell out quickly, so if you wish to join us be sure to book as soon as possible. 

If the weather is not suitable for this outdoor event, it will be cancelled on or before the evening of the 9th August and full refunds offered.

En Plein Air - Life Drawing Sunday!

Our next 3 hour life drawing Sunday afternoon is at our new venue, The Hatchery in Middle Aston on Sunday 6th July. The model will be announced soon, but meanwhile, if you wish to join us, please book your place as soon as possible as places are limited to just 12. 

The Hatchery is a purpose designed professional art studio, well stocked with easels, plenty of parking, a separate cafe on site and all in a beautiful little village setting. It’s possible to bring your own paints for the longer poses, but there is plenty of different media to experiment with in the studio.

Weekly guided life drawing in the heart of Jericho, Oxford.  

We take you through an artistic process that helps to take your life drawings to a new level 

Sessions start at 11 am and run until 1 pm.  All materials are supplied

This was the best way to  begin drawing practice in the New Year for me.  Great tutoring, venue and model.  A well organised and a useful, pleasurable session.

Wonderfully wise tutoring by Mike who really understands live-drawing, this group has a great atmosphere with input from other students as well as first class model and lovely light in a welcoming room.

I'm new to charcoals and life drawing, but wanted to take on the challenge of faces, limbs, hands and feet.  My first session was brilliant.  The first hour was spent on exercises, eg lighting sketches, then drawing with your non dominant hand, then drawing without letting the charcoal leave the paper.  Then the second hour was spent on a long portrait.  Paper and materials are all provided.  If free on a Saturday this will be my go to place.

We are delighted to welcome back to SSJ our marathon man, Mike! He's very lean and has a well defined physique, so he's ideal for those artists who want to refine their anatomy drawing.  The session is untutored, starts at 2pm and finishes at 5pm with a couple of breaks. There's plenty of parking beside the village hall, easels, boards, paper and media, plus a relaxing playlist and nice refreshments!
